Recharge. Refresh.

Recharge. Refresh.

Traditionally this is a quiet time of year for Grit. We’d normally spend the time browsing the brochures, dusting off the deckchair, packing for the poolside.

But not this year!

These last couple of weeks we’ve spent two days in coaching workshops with staff at the University of Manchester. We’ve been in working with staff and with students at Thomas Alleyne High School in Staffordshire. We’ve been completing programmes with young people in schools in Warwickshire and West London, and with Black Leaders at the University of Hull. We’ve begun a programme at Q3 Academy in Sandwell.

And we’ve been delivering multi-school programmes with the University of Sheffield and in Nottingham with DANCOP (a partnership of universities and colleges in the East Midlands).

When the dust has settled we will, of course, make sure we take a break to recharge and refresh. But, until then, from everyone here at Grit, have a fantastic summer and we’ll see you again in September!

Different possibilities

As a team it's allowed us  envision a different possibility for ourselves and a different possibility for the services that we deliver

Vicky, Assistant Director for Children's Social Care and Early Help at Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, describes the impact that Grit has had on the senior team. She talks about the way that her own leadership approach has changed and how Grit has challenged her team to put relationship at the front and centre of the work they do; and how this has reinvigorated their thinking and their practice with children and families.

One simple question

With the student body in universities set for more sudden and rapid expansion and change, read our piece in the July edition of HE Professional where we discuss some simple things universities can do with students to create connection, belonging and the sense of feeling part of something bigger.

In conference

AMOSSHE is the Higher Education Student Services Body – a  membership organisation that promotes good practice in Student Services in universities across the UK.

This year Grit took a turn with long-time friend Sarah Hadlow, Collaborative Engagement and Retention Team Manager at Nottingham Trent University (NTU), to talk about how we foster student belonging and community, and in particular our work at NTU.

We're still getting to grips with the world of virtual conferences but, we have to say, we're beginning to rather enjoy them!
